Planning a dinner gathering, I remembered “Wonjo Hanchi” in Myeongdong, near Euljiroipgu Station, where I had enjoyed a delicious Pollack Stew (Saengtaetang) for lunch previously. I recalled seeing a sign for Dakbokkeumtang (Spicy Braised Chicken) that required advance reservations, so I decided to book it for our evening meeting.

Wonjo Hanchi, located near Euljiroipgu Station in Myeongdong, is quite famous among office workers as a go-to spot for Saengtaetang during lunchtime. Since my lunch experience with the stew was so pleasant, I naturally expected their other dishes, including the Dakbokkeumtang, to be just as delicious, which led to my reservation.
Myeongdong Wonjo Hanchi – Garlic Dakbokkeumtang
We ordered the Garlic Dakbokkeumtang, expecting something similar to Gyerim Dakbokkeumtang, which is known for its overwhelming amount of garlic. However, to my surprise, it didn’t contain an excessive amount of garlic like Gyerim. While the Dakbokkeumtang was okay, the portion size felt a bit lacking.

Myeongdong Wonjo Hanchi – Hanchi Twigim (Deep-fried Squid)
To compensate for the smaller portion, we subsequently ordered Hanchi Twigim (Deep-fried Squid). The fried squid was crispy and savory, tasting exactly as one would expect from typical fried squid, with a familiar texture and flavor.

Myeongdong Wonjo Hanchi – Hanchi Bulgogi (Stir-fried Squid with Sauce)
Next, we ordered Hanchi Bulgogi (Stir-fried Squid with Sauce). I recall the seasoning being quite strong and sweet, which unfortunately clashed with the Dakbokkeumtang’s sauce, making it a rather unsuccessful order in combination.

Summary
Reflecting on the meal, the Saengtaetang I had for lunch was truly outstanding. It’s already popular for a reason, effectively warming you up and helping to shake off a hangover. However, the dishes we ordered for our evening gathering, including the Dakbokkeumtang, felt rather unexceptional in terms of taste and texture. Perhaps Wonjo Hanchi truly shines as a lunchtime Saengtaetang spot.
